Woman fights for life as vomiting bug on Turkey holiday ends in critical illness

A woman’s birthday trip to Turkey took a dangerous turn as she fought for her life due to a sudden illness. Ronni Douglas, 26, was enjoying an all-inclusive holiday in Bodrum when she experienced severe stomach pains and uncontrollable vomiting just three days into her vacation. Ronni was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a perforated oesophagus, a critical condition that poses a life-threatening risk.

Facing substantial medical expenses, Ronni’s family struggles to cover the costs of her emergency care. With a current bill of £5,000 and potential surgery looming, the financial burden is overwhelming. Ronni’s inability to leave Turkey until her health stabilises compounds the situation. In response, her sister Fallon Douglas initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the mounting medical bills, raising over £2,000 to date but still requiring additional support.

The holiday, which commenced on August 12 with Ronni, her niece, nephew, and mother Dawn, abruptly turned into a medical emergency when Ronni required hospitalisation. Fallon recounted the distressing ordeal as Ronni’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading to a second hospital visit and the grave diagnosis. Dawn has already spent nearly £1,000 on initial care expenses and transportation for Ronni’s young family members back to the UK. Anticipating a £5,000 bill for ongoing treatment and escalating charges during Ronni’s hospitalisation, the family is grappling with substantial financial strain.

The family’s oversight of travelling without insurance compounded the financial predicament, with coverage only secured after two days into the holiday. Despite obtaining insurance later, the family was informed that it would not cover Ronni’s medical expenses, leaving them to face the daunting costs alone. Fallon emphasised the severity of Ronni’s condition, noting the challenges imposed by the language barrier and the uncertainty surrounding the final medical bill.

As Ronni remains too ill to be transported, the family continues to seek financial aid for her crucial treatment. The fundraising campaign launched by the family aims to alleviate the financial burden and ensure Ronni receives the necessary medical care. The community’s support is pivotal during this challenging period, with donations vital in assisting Ronni’s recovery. The family expressed gratitude for any assistance provided, acknowledging the community’s solidarity during this difficult time.
