Terry Davies, a resident, highlighted the issue, saying, “There are rats everywhere.” Business owners also voiced concerns about littering and fly-tipping in the area.
Despite the challenges, there’s a positive side to Cathays often overlooked. The Parish Church of St Michaels and All Angels conducts litter picks, fostering community connections. The church volunteers emphasised the empowering effect of collective action in improving the neighbourhood. Similarly, Dar Ul Isra Mosque provides essential support through a food bank for over 80 families, highlighting community solidarity.
Efforts to combat litter include Cardiff Council’s initiatives like increased collections and student education on recycling. Maindy Road residents, with support from Cardiff University, are transforming their street into a hedgehog-friendly environment to promote community cohesion. The Greening Cathays project, led by Cardiff University, aims to create more green spaces in the area with community involvement.
Improving aesthetics in Cathays is key to encouraging pride and respect among residents. Landlord Scott Harris suggested enhancing property appearances to foster a sense of community pride. Cardiff Council’s focus on waste management and green initiatives aligns with community efforts to create a cleaner, greener neighbourhood.
Councillor Sarah Merry acknowledged the community’s positive initiatives amidst challenges, emphasising the diverse range of activities and support networks in Cathays. By fostering community engagement, from litter picks to education campaigns, residents are actively contributing to a better living environment.
