Teenager’s Life Transformed by Stoma Bag After Severe Bowel Condition
Teigan Griffiths, from Gilfach Goch, had been enduring severe bowel issues that led her to only go to the toilet every two or three weeks, while her weight dropped to a worrying five stone. The 19-year-old revealed that despite needing 10 sachets of laxatives daily, her health continued to deteriorate with persistent stomach pains. Doctors struggled to pinpoint the exact cause of her debilitating condition, which saw her spend two years in and out of hospitals and even facing life-threatening sepsis.
Teigan’s ordeal began as she embarked on her A level course at Gwent College, experiencing excruciating stomach pains that eventually led to hospitalization in December 2021. Over the next 12 months, she underwent a series of tests and treatments without a definitive diagnosis until March 2023 when it was discovered that her bowel muscles and nerves had ceased to function. Despite the challenges, Teigan persevered with the unwavering support of her parents and college.
In a turning point in her health journey, Teigan underwent a life-changing surgery in May 2023 that involved the removal of her bowel and the fitting of a stoma bag. The procedure not only restored her health but also gave her a new lease on life. Through her recovery, Teigan has embraced her stoma bag, fondly referred to as “Roma the Stoma,” which has allowed her to regain her strength and appetite.
Now weighing six and a half stone, Teigan is thrilled to be back to a healthy weight and is enjoying a newfound freedom to eat without pain. Her remarkable progress has motivated her to pursue her dream of joining the police force, with ambitions to surpass her current weight goal and resume physical activities. Teigan’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration, demonstrating that obstacles can be overcome with courage and support from loved ones.
As she continues on her path to recovery and pursues her aspirations, Teigan hopes to raise awareness about living with a stoma and break down the stigma surrounding the treatment. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, showcasing the transformative power of medical intervention in restoring health and rebuilding lives.
