Dentist says there are five signs of ‘concerning’ condition

A dentist has highlighted the five warning signs of a concerning oral condition known as black hairy tongue. Despite its alarming name, this condition is generally harmless and can be easily managed at home without the need for a dental visit. Black hairy tongue is characterised by an abnormal coating on the top of the tongue, giving it a dark, hairy appearance. This occurs when the tiny projections on the tongue, called papillae, become elongated and stained by food, bacteria, or other substances.

Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, emphasized the importance of understanding the signs, causes, and treatments of black hairy tongue. Although it may look serious, black hairy tongue is typically benign and temporary, affecting up to 13% of the population at some point. Factors such as poor oral hygiene, smoking, and age can increase susceptibility to this condition.

The key symptoms of black hairy tongue outlined by Dr. Bozic include a discoloured tongue, furry or hairy texture, bad breath, altered taste, and a gagging sensation. Lifestyle factors such as poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, diet low in fibrous foods, consumption of dark-coloured foods and drinks, medications, and conditions leading to dry mouth can contribute to the development of black hairy tongue.

To treat black hairy tongue, Dr. Bozic recommends improving oral hygiene by brushing the teeth and tongue regularly, quitting tobacco, consuming fibrous foods, staying hydrated, using antibacterial mouthwash, and attending regular dental check-ups. If black hairy tongue persists despite good oral hygiene or is accompanied by pain, bad breath, or swallowing difficulties, seeking professional dental advice is crucial as it could indicate an underlying medical condition.

In rare cases, black hairy tongue may be a sign of a more serious health issue, underscoring the importance of consulting a dentist for proper evaluation and treatment. By being aware of the signs and taking appropriate steps to maintain good oral hygiene, individuals can effectively manage black hairy tongue and safeguard their oral health.
