A burglar who broke into a shop and stole £7,000 worth of tobacco and e-cigarettes found himself entangled in a police chase as he attempted to flee. Ryan Thomas, 30, along with another accomplice, caused £3,000 worth of damage to Maesycwmmer Stores in Caerphilly on May 1. The duo triggered an alarm by manipulating the shutters with a rope, before returning to break a shop window to steal the items.
At a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Thomas fled the scene in a black Audi A3 with false plates. A police officer spotted him in a layby near Merthyr Tydfil town centre, where he proceeded to drive recklessly, reaching excessive speeds through the town centre in the early hours. The pursuit ended when Thomas’ vehicle became stuck, leading to his arrest.
Thomas, residing in Darren Las, Merthyr Vale, admitted to charges of burglary, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen, and driving without insurance. His criminal history included prior convictions for driving offenses. Recorder David Warner, during sentencing, noted the financial loss and distress inflicted upon the shop, emphasising the impact on a small business compared to a larger corporation.
As a result, Thomas was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, ordered to pay £100 in costs, and received a 45-month driving ban. The incident serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences that follow criminal actions.
