A drug dealing father was found with £8,000 in cash and over £17,000 worth of cocaine hidden under his bed, a court in Swansea heard. Shaun Gwyther, 26, was revealed to have been purchasing large quantities of cocaine from an associate who was importing the drug into the UK from Amsterdam. When arrested, Gwyther claimed he was simply trying to make ends meet. The court sentenced him to 52 months in prison but noted there was hope for his rehabilitation and did not want to crush his spirit.
The prosecution outlined how police had discovered the drug supply operation during a separate investigation, leading to Gwyther’s arrest. Upon searching his residence, officers found cocaine and cash concealed under the bed, with a total of 717g of cocaine valued at over £20,000 recovered. Gwyther admitted to his involvement in buying and selling cocaine in Swansea for several months, using burner phones for communication.
Despite his involvement in a significant drug operation, Gwyther’s defence highlighted his struggles with addiction and mental health issues, exacerbated by losing his job before the Covid pandemic. The judge acknowledged Gwyther’s potential for reform and handed down a sentence of 52 months in prison, with the possibility of early release on licence.
Gwyther, residing in Elphin Gardens, Townhill, Swansea, pleaded guilty to drug-related charges and possession of criminal proceeds. The court recognised his lack of prior convictions but emphasised the gravity of his drug supply activities. The sentence, running concurrently, encompassed multiple charges related to cocaine possession and supply.
In a bid to ensure accountability and deter others from similar criminal activities, the court’s decision sends a stern message against drug dealing in the region. The case underscores the prevalence of drug-related crime and the stringent measures in place to combat such illicit operations.
