Frustration mounts in Barry over delays to millions of pounds in funds that could transform the town centre. Barry was poised to benefit from a £20m injection through the long-term plan for towns fund. This funding, to be distributed in £2m instalments over a decade, would support various enhancements such as revitalising the high street, addressing anti-social behaviour, and enhancing connectivity. However, the UK Government recently announced a hold on the decision-making process for the fund post-election, leading to uncertainty.
Vale of Glamorgan Councillor Ian Johnson expressed disappointment at the postponement, emphasizing the urgent need for investment in places like Holton Road and the wider town centre. While waiting for funding approval, Cllr Johnson urged immediate action by the Vale Council to spruce up the town centre, collaborate with landlords to fill vacant shops, and partner with the police to combat anti-social behaviour. The money was intended for a partnership managed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, which has, to date, only received funding to establish a town board.
Deputy leader of Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cllr Bronwen Brooks, highlighted ongoing efforts to prepare for the impending funding, despite delays. Planning includes the submission of a revitalization strategy for Barry, aligned with the revised timeline mandated by the UK Government. Separate from this delayed fund, Barry secured a £20m levelling up grant in November 2023 for creating a vibrant public area in Barry Docks. The council confirmed readiness to submit the required Barry Partnership vision for funding access whenever officially requested.
As the saga of delayed funds continues, stakeholders remain hopeful that Barry’s rejuvenation projects will eventually come to fruition. Despite setbacks, plans for progressive development in Barry persist, with collaborative efforts involving the Welsh Government and Cardiff and Vale College already in motion. The community eagerly awaits decisive government action to unlock the much-needed resources for Barry’s transformation.
