A reckless driver, identified as David Cousins, 27, was involved in a harrowing police chase through the streets of Newport, reaching speeds of up to 80mph. The incident occurred in the early hours of February 25 last year when Cousins was observed by police driving erratically in a Seat Leon. When signalled to stop by officers, Cousins chose to flee instead. The pursuit continued through various residential areas, with Cousins driving dangerously and breaking multiple traffic rules, including speeding through red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road.
The chase escalated as Cousins manoeuvred through narrow residential streets at alarmingly high speeds, endangering himself and others in the vicinity. Police officers eventually deployed a stinger device on Aberthaw Road, successfully bringing the car to a stop. Upon apprehension, Cousins was found in possession of cocaine, adding to his already extensive history of drug-related offences.
At a sentencing hearing held at Newport Crown Court, Cousins pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and cocaine possession. The court heard that Cousins had prior convictions, particularly for supplying class A drugs. Despite efforts at mitigation by his lawyer, Matthew Comer, where it was highlighted that Cousins had been drug-free since being released from prison, Recorder David Warner condemned the defendant’s actions as “prolonged, persistent and deliberate.”
Ultimately, Cousins was handed a suspended prison sentence of 32 weeks, to be served over two years. He was also ordered to perform 120 hours of unpaid work, undergo a 30-day rehabilitation programme, pay £150 in court costs, and face a two-year driving disqualification. The judge emphasised the severity and recklessness of Cousins’ behaviour, stating that his actions were a result of complete foolishness and a blatant disregard for the law and public safety.
