A former factory in Port Talbot is set to be transformed into a state-of-the-art kidney dialysis unit, catering to patients with kidney disease in south Wales. The Stationery House on Acacia Avenue would undergo conversion, funded by NHS Wales and operated on behalf of Swansea Bay University Health Board by a private company called Fresenius Medical Care UK.
This initiative follows a similar project in Bridgend, where a new dialysis unit operated by Fresenius Medical Care was established to ease pressure on renal services at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Renal services are crucial for patients in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Hywel Dda, and Cwm Taf Morgannwg health boards. The planned Port Talbot unit aims to provide modern facilities for patients under NHS clinical care.
Health board spokesperson Deb Lewis highlighted the urgency for the new unit, as the existing facilities in Morriston Hospital are operating at 140% capacity, with a growing demand for dialysis services. The Port Talbot unit is currently undergoing public consultation until September 9, with plans to accommodate up to 27 patients simultaneously, providing around 16,848 treatments annually.
The dialysis unit will offer haemodialysis services, where patients’ blood is filtered in a machine three times a week, each session lasting approximately four hours. The converted factory will operate six days a week and offer a significant improvement in facilities for patients. Despite additional traffic in the area, support for the unit has been expressed by various stakeholders, including a healthcare worker and patient advocate.
Llais, a patient watchdog group, acknowledges the need to expand dialysis services in the region and supports initiatives to bring care closer to patients’ homes. The progression of this project aligns with a broader £70 million, 10-year investment by NHS Wales to enhance dialysis services across the region.
The proposed facility represents a critical advancement in healthcare infrastructure, aiming to improve accessibility and quality of care for patients with kidney disease in the area. The collaboration between NHS Wales and private healthcare providers is set to enhance patient outcomes and address the increasing demands for renal services in south Wales.
