Dated blocks of flats near Swansea’s High Street are receiving a significant makeover, as reported by Wales Online. The work on Croft Street, which is expected to take around 18 months to complete, will involve a major investment by Swansea Council in transforming two high-rise blocks and low-rise homes adjacent to them. The renovation project includes the fitting of new kitchens, bathrooms, fire sprinklers, weather-proof cladding for improved energy efficiency, as well as new security systems.
Residents of the flats expressed their anticipation and satisfaction with the forthcoming upgrades. With contractors potentially starting work by the end of September, tenants are looking forward to improvements such as new windows. The project also entails the refurbishment of a row of retail units facing High Street and the retention of garages on Croft Street.
Cllr Andrea Lewis, joint deputy leader and cabinet member for service transformation, highlighted the positive impact of past refurbishments on tenants in nearby Matthew Street. She assured residents that although some disruption may be inevitable during such a large-scale project, efforts would be made to minimize it, with regular updates provided to residents throughout the process. The council’s ongoing investment in properties is funded by tenants’ rent and Welsh Government grants, rather than council tax.
The council’s commitment to improving housing standards in Swansea is evident, with around £500 million spent in the past decade to bring its properties up to Welsh housing quality requirements. Further investments, amounting to £250 million over the next five years, will focus on enhancing homes and constructing energy-efficient properties to increase the availability of council housing. Residents can expect continued improvements to their living spaces as the council works towards providing comfortable and modern accommodation for all.
