Scientists claim a groundbreaking tool allows dog owners to chat with their pets, reports Wales Online. According to the study, dogs can communicate with humans using a soundboard. This innovative research gained attention after viral TikTok videos showcased pet owners attempting to engage in conversations with their furry friends.
The study, published recently, reveals how soundboards with buttons linked to various commands like ‘play’, ‘outside’, or ‘food’ enable dogs to express their desires. While initially viewed as a novelty, researchers confirmed that dogs can indeed understand words from these boards, marking a significant breakthrough.
Associate Professor Federico Rossano of UC San Diego stated, “Our findings are important because they show that words matter to dogs, and that they respond to the words themselves, not just to associated cues.” The research involved examining dog behaviour in 30 homes across the US and monitoring their responses remotely.
Results indicated that dogs exhibited ‘appropriate behaviours’ in response to words such as ‘play-related’ and ‘outside-related’. The study concluded that pet dogs can be taught by their owners to associate words on soundboard buttons with real-world outcomes, and respond correctly even without additional cues like body language.
Looking ahead, Professor Rossano aims to delve deeper into exploring the full extent of dogs’ communicative abilities. He stressed the importance of studying animals in their natural environments to gain a more authentic understanding of their capabilities. The research has sparked widespread interest among dog lovers, prompting discussions on the potential for meaningful interactions with pets.
