The British Gas Energy Trust is offering individuals with energy bill debts the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £1,700. This fund is available to help clear energy debts as the colder weather approaches. The Individuals and Families Fund (IFF) has reopened to support those facing energy bill challenges, particularly as an estimated 10 million elderly people are no longer eligible for Winter Fuel Payments.
In contrast to the Winter Fuel Payments eligibility changes affecting pensioners in England and Wales, the IFF is open to anyone in need of assistance with energy debt. In the previous year, the Trust supported over 5,300 households with more than £7.8m in energy debt grants, with a majority provided to households in England. Jessica Taplin, CEO of the Trust, emphasised the importance of applying for the fund to address the potential increase in bills due to the energy price cap rise and changing eligibility criteria for Winter Fuel Payments.
Aside from energy debt grants, the Trust also supports 29 money and energy advice projects in community-based charities and social enterprises throughout England. These projects offer free and impartial advice on budgeting, benefits, energy efficiency, as well as generalist topics like housing and mental health support. To apply for the Individuals and Families Fund, individuals must consult a money advice agency or use the online budgeting tool provided before submitting their application.
