Young woman dismissed ‘hard’ belly and other red flags and was hit with devastating diagnosis

A young woman who ignored the signs of a “hard” and swollen belly along with other symptoms has shared her tough journey after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Tora Murphy, 25, from Brisbane, Australia, was travelling the world when she noticed extreme stomach bloating. Despite looking “six months pregnant,” she initially dismissed it as nothing serious and continued travelling with her partner.

After enduring four weeks of discomfort and other symptoms, Tora finally decided to seek medical help while in the UK. In June 2023, she received the devastating news of her cancer diagnosis. Reflecting on her experience in a TikTok video, she emphasised the importance of not ignoring unusual symptoms and urged others to consult a doctor promptly when something feels wrong.

Looking back, Tora recognised several red flag symptoms of ovarian cancer that she had experienced but brushed off. Apart from severe bloating, she also faced issues such as feeling full all the time, weight loss, acid reflux, and pain during sex. These symptoms, though seemingly harmless on their own, collectively indicated a serious underlying condition.

Following her diagnosis, Tora began chemotherapy treatment to combat the disease. Her story serves as a reminder that ovarian cancer symptoms can be vague and easily overlooked, underscoring the importance of early detection. Cancer Research UK reports that ovarian cancer ranks as the sixth most common cancer among women in the UK, with approximately 7,500 new cases annually.

Tora encouraged women to pay attention to their bodies and seek medical help if they notice any alarming symptoms. By sharing her experience, she hopes to raise awareness about the subtle signs of ovarian cancer and empower others to take their health seriously. Despite the challenges she faced, Tora remains determined to persevere through her treatment and continue her fight against the disease.
