The maternity and neonatal units at Bridgend’s Princess of Wales Hospital have temporarily closed for an “urgent refurbishment”. The closure, which began on Monday, September 2, will span 12 weeks to facilitate essential improvement works. A sum of £1 million is being invested to secure the future of both units and maintain the provision of safe and effective care for families.
During this closure period, no maternity or neonatal specialists will be available at the hospital. Families are advised not to attempt to access the accident and emergency department if labour is suspected. Instead, they should have already made arrangements with their community midwife for where the birth will occur. If labour symptoms arise or waters break, individuals are encouraged to contact their planned birthplace to coordinate assessment by a midwife.
Affected families have the option to receive care at alternative centres, including Prince Charles Hospital, Singleton Hospital, Tirion Freestanding Birth Centre, and University Hospital of Wales.
