Protesters voiced their discontent outside Ceredigion Council offices as the council’s cabinet convened to discuss a proposal to shut down four Welsh-medium schools in rural areas. The schools at risk of closure are Ysgol Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, Ysgol Craig yr Wylfa in Borth, Ysgol Llangwyryfon, and Ysgol Syr John Rhys in Ponterwyd. Ceredigion Council cited declining student numbers as the primary reason behind the decision.
Scores of individuals gathered outside the council offices, holding placards to demonstrate their opposition to the plan. Welsh language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith accused the council of disregarding the concerns of parents and residents in their pursuit to close the schools. They have vowed to file a formal complaint with Education Minister Lynne Neagle, alleging that the council’s actions contravene the Welsh Government’s School Organization Code.
Cymdeithas yr Iaith highlighted the successful academic performance of the schools and questioned the decision to close them instead of exploring alternative solutions. They emphasised the importance of these schools as community hubs that contribute to the preservation of the Welsh language in the region. The campaign group condemned the council’s approach, stating that meaningful dialogue with stakeholders was lacking in the decision-making process.
Despite Ceredigion Council’s assertion that the schools are no longer financially viable, opponents argue that the closure would have a detrimental impact on Welsh-speaking communities. Ffred Ffransis, representing Cymdeithas yr Iaith, expressed concern over the potential loss of these institutions, noting their role in sustaining the Welsh language as a living part of the community.
In response, the Welsh Government reiterated the importance of the School Organisation Code, which discourages the closure of rural schools without strong justification. The Government emphasised the need to explore all viable options before resorting to closure. Ceredigion Council has yet to provide a formal response to the criticisms and concerns raised by campaigners and community members regarding the proposed school closures.
