New research has highlighted the potentially detrimental effects of light pollution on our health, with specialists linking it to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A team from Frontiers investigated the exposure of citizens in the lower 48 US states to artificial nocturnal light and discovered a worrying connection with the incidence of Alzheimer’s.
The study revealed a ‘positive association’ between the prevalence of Alzheimer’s and levels of light pollution, indicating that this environmental concern may pose a greater health risk than other factors such as alcohol consumption, depression, or obesity. Dr Robin Voigt-Zuwala, an associate professor at Rush University Medical Center, explained that there is a positive association between AD prevalence and exposure to light at night, particularly in those under the age of 65.
Nightly light pollution – a modifiable environmental factor – may be an important risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. However, the research team has acknowledged that established contributors to Alzheimer’s like diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes have a more significant correlation with the condition in people over 65 compared to artificial light at night.
Yet, for younger individuals, the glow of evening lights appears to be a primary indicator for Alzheimer’s, outweighing the other examined factors. Although it’s currently unclear why this may be, experts speculate that individual differences in light sensitivity may be the culprit. Dr. Voigt-Zuwala suggested implementing easy lifestyle changes, such as using warm lighting inside your home or installing dimmers to reduce exposure.
He also recommended using blackout curtains or sleeping with eye masks, especially for those living in areas with high light pollution. The experts hope their findings will empower people to make these adjustments to reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This research sheds light on a new environmental factor that could significantly impact public health, especially regarding younger populations.
