Psychologist lists four signs your relationship will end in a messy divorce

Clinical psychologist Dr. Kathy Nickerson has outlined the four key warning signs that suggest a relationship is on the path to a messy divorce. These signs, known as Gottman’s Four Horsemen, are crucial indicators of relationship breakdown, with a success rate of predicting divorce at over 90%. Dr. Nickerson shared this valuable information with her followers on TikTok, shedding light on the behaviours that can jeopardise a partnership.

The first behaviour is contempt, where there is a visible disdain for one’s partner through eye-rolling, groaning, or gestures that demonstrate contempt. The second red flag is criticism, involving a pattern of constant fault-finding with one’s partner. Stonewalling, the third sign, occurs when one shuts down emotionally and refuses to engage with their partner’s point of view. Lastly, defensiveness, where one deflects blame and fails to take responsibility, can signal trouble in a relationship.

Dr. Nickerson’s insights were inspired by the research of Dr. John Gottman from The Gottman Institute, who analysed 130 newlyweds to assess the longevity of their relationships based on observable behaviours. The couples’ stress levels were monitored during disagreements, revealing the impact of these behaviours on relationship dynamics. The psychologist’s online post sparked discussions among social media users, prompting reflections on personal experiences and relationship dynamics.

As individuals began sharing their own encounters with these warning signs, some expressed gratitude for the awareness raised by Dr. Nickerson. While divorce may not be inevitable for all relationships exhibiting these behaviours, recognising and addressing them early on can be crucial for fostering healthier communication and connection. By understanding the significance of these warning signs, couples can proactively work towards strengthening their relationship and potentially averting a messy divorce.
