Steve Evans, a man from Ystradgynlais, had no idea he had a genetic heart condition until his early 40s. Initially experiencing unusual chest sensations while out walking, Steve was sent to the hospital by a concerned colleague where he discovered his heartbeat was dangerously irregular. Following a diagnosis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, Steve underwent a procedure to restore normal heart rhythm and had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted.
Despite being active and leading a relatively normal life, Steve’s condition worsened in 2017 and escalated by 2020, leading to extreme pain and triggering his ICD frequently. In 2022, Steve was placed on the heart transplant list, enduring a year-long wait and facing five potential donor hearts that were ultimately ruled out. Finally, in November 2023, Steve received the life-changing call and underwent a successful heart transplant at Harefield Hospital, though he struggled with sepsis post-surgery.
After a difficult recovery that included weight loss and muscle atrophy, Steve has defied expectations by planning to participate in a 61-mile charity bike ride less than a year after his transplant to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and Morriston Hospital cardiac unit. Encouraged by his passion for cycling and determination to give back, Steve’s journey showcases resilience and gratitude for a second chance at life.
