**Children Narrowly Escape Catastrophe After Playing Chicken on a Railway in Welsh Village**
Police have issued a stern warning after a harrowing incident where two children narrowly avoided disaster while playing chicken on a railway line in a serene Welsh village. The heart-stopping moment saw a train driver having to perform an emergency stop upon spotting one of the youths on the tracks at the last minute, preventing a potential tragedy.
The alarming situation occurred on the Heart of Wales line near Knighton, bordering Powys and Shropshire, with Transport for Wales confirming the event at around 2:40 PM on Sunday, September 8. Despite a joint effort by West Mercia Police, Dyfed-Powys Police, and British Transport Police to locate the children, the search was unsuccessful.
Stuart Coote from West Mercia Police urgently appealed to the children involved, stressing the dire consequences of their actions as they not only put themselves in extreme danger but also endangered those on the train. This incident comes in the wake of distressing CCTV footage released in July, showcasing individuals taking dangerous risks at level crossings.
Network Rail has also shared a video to remind parents and children about the importance of being vigilant around railways, highlighting the risks associated with irresponsible behaviour near train tracks. To address railway safety education, a unique safety centre has been set up in Margate by the community safety team to provide interactive sessions for schools, clubs, and groups.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with trespassing on railway lines and the potential risks it poses to both individuals and train passengers. Authorities are working to raise awareness about the importance of safety measures around railway tracks to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
