Doctor Who spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea films in Cardiff city centre

A Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, has been filming in Cardiff city centre this week. Filming crews occupied the City Arms pub on Quay Street, where actor Russell Tovey was spotted on set. Tovey, known for roles in Being Human and Gavin & Stacey, shared his work in Cardiff on social media. While most scenes were shot inside the pub, Tovey took occasional breaks outside. Also present were actors dressed as UNIT soldiers, a government agency in Doctor Who lore. The new spin-off, confirmed earlier this year, stars Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, both familiar faces in the Doctor Who universe.

The show, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, takes place within The Whoniverse and features classic monsters like the Sea Devils. Returning cast members include Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley. Davies revealed at Comic Con 2024 that the plot revolves around a conflict between sea-dwelling beings and humans over ocean neglect. The series’ airdate is yet to be announced, but it will be accessible on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ internationally. The anticipated spin-off promises to expand the Doctor Who universe for fans worldwide.
