A valleys special school in Rhondda Cynon Taf is set to expand to accommodate a growing number of students. The Rhondda Cynon Taf planning committee approved a new classroom block for Maesgwyn Special School in Cwmdare on September 12th. The new single-storey classroom block will contain three classrooms and will be built on the site of the multi-use games area at the school.
According to the planning report, Maesgwyn Special School caters to children aged 11-19 with complex learning needs and currently has 120 pupils. However, with an expected increase in pupil numbers, additional teaching space is required. The approved classroom block is designed to provide modern educational facilities for the students.
Although there was one objection citing concerns about privacy, noise, and property value, planning officers have recommended approval of the development. They stated that the proposal would enhance educational facilities at the school without significantly impacting neighbouring properties. The report also mentioned that the outdoor play areas at the school will be retained and improved.
The development will see the construction of a new building on an existing area of hardstanding used as a multi-use games area. The committee chair and local member, Sharon Rees, welcomed the expansion, emphasizing the importance of the new facility for children with special needs. She assured that the classroom block would not cause disturbances to nearby houses.
