Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has instructed all staff to return to the office five days a week starting next year, reverting to pre-Covid working conditions. In a memo to employees, Jassy outlined that people were expected to work in the office, except in extenuating circumstances, from January 2 onwards. This decision comes after Amazon made it compulsory in 2023 for corporate employees to be in the office three days a week, marking a shift from remote and hybrid working arrangements during the pandemic.
The move towards full-time office presence follows Mr. Jassy’s belief in the positive impact of in-person collaboration on the company’s operations. However, some opposition arose last year among Amazon workers, with over 20,000 signing a petition urging a reconsideration of the return-to-office policy. In Seattle, employees staged a walkout amidst widespread layoffs at the company.
In his memo, Jassy clarified that staff with extenuating circumstances or remote work agreements with their managers would not be required to work in the office. The CEO emphasised that before the pandemic, not everyone was in the office five days a week, acknowledging the flexibility for various situations. He highlighted the benefits of being physically present for enhancing innovation, collaboration, and connection within the company culture.
Additionally, Amazon plans to reintroduce assigned desks in offices that previously utilised hot-desking and aims to reduce the number of managers to streamline operations and minimise bureaucratic layers. The company’s workforce expanded significantly during the pandemic to meet escalating demand, with a focus on increasing the ratio of individual contributors to managers by 15% by 2025.
Amanda Gearing, a senior organiser for GMB representing Amazon workers in the UK, criticised the company’s decision, citing an increase in staff joining the union. While the return-to-office mandate stands, Amazon strives to enhance its internal structure and operational efficiency as it readies for a full-time office environment.
