Plans to demolish the iconic Buccaneer pub in Porthcawl, a former seafront establishment that had been a social hub for locals, have been submitted to the local council. The pub, known for its lively atmosphere and entertainment, was closed in April 2024 after decades of serving the community. Situated in a building that dates back to the 1930s, the Buccaneer was a popular spot featuring live music, a jukebox, pool table, and affordable pints at £3.
A notice posted in October 2024 revealed the potential demolition of the pub, which had been a central location for nightlife in the area. The fate of the site following demolition remains uncertain. This announcement comes on the heels of the closure of the Buccaneer Complex, which housed the pub, a surf shop, a kebab shop, and bungalows whose tenants were displaced. Additionally, the well-known Coney Beach amusement park nearby is set to close in the next two years for a regeneration project led by Bridgend Council, involving changes to the area’s infrastructure and the construction of new homes, a school, and roads through Griffin Park.
Town councillor Brian Jones expressed nostalgia for the Buccaneer, acknowledging its historical significance to the town. While lamenting the demolition, Jones emphasised the importance of any future development attracting tourism to Porthcawl. Despite the sentimental value attached to the Buccaneer, residents await news on what will replace the beloved pub and contribute to the town’s evolving landscape.
