A devoted father’s decision to donate his kidney to his daughter has brought hope and transformation to their family. Azizur Rahman and Tanya Miah have faced the challenges of their young daughter Diyanah’s kidney failure. Diyanah, now aged four, has undergone extensive medical procedures, including surgeries like partial lung removal. However, her resilience continues to inspire her family.
Azizur, a legal trainee, paused his career to care for Diyanah, while his wife pursued her legal training. The decision to offer his kidney to his daughter stemmed from a father’s love and dedication. Diyanah’s medical journey prompted Azizur and his family to advocate for organ donation, aiming to dispel myths and encourage more people, especially within religious communities, to consider donation as a means of saving lives.
Azizur faced challenges within his religious community regarding organ donation due to misconceptions. However, he discovered that his faith, Islam, permits organ donation under specific conditions, aligning with NHS guidelines. He emphasized the importance of informed decisions and discussions within families to support organ donation and potentially impact multiple lives positively.
After shedding excess weight to become a suitable donor, Azizur underwent a successful kidney transplant procedure at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Diyanah now enjoys a healthier life, attending school and exploring new experiences. The transplant not only saved Diyanah but also prompted positive lifestyle changes for Azizur, underscoring the profound impact of organ donation.
Azizur’s experience highlights the need for more donors, especially within South Asian communities. Addressing misconceptions and promoting awareness about organ donation is crucial to meet the growing demand for transplants. By sharing their story, Azizur and his family hope to inspire others to consider the life-saving potential of organ donation and challenge existing beliefs.
