A tragic incident has come to light as Hallie-Jayne Kompaniez Thomas, a newborn baby, passed away just days after her birth at Cardiff’s neonatal intensive unit in the University Hospital of Wales. The baby’s mother, Laura, gave birth to her two days earlier.
At an inquest held at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Hallie-Jayne became very unwell shortly after her birth, suffering from severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, which indicates a lack of oxygen to the brain during birth, leading to adverse effects on her brain. Medical professionals put her on therapeutic hypothermia treatment to address potential brain damage.
Further medical interventions were conducted over a series of hours, but despite efforts to stabilise her condition, Hallie-Jayne’s health continued to deteriorate. In light of her persistently poor condition with low blood pressure, worsening kidney function, and blood clotting issues, doctors discussed with the family the likely outcomes if her condition did not improve.
On August 22, 2021, as Hallie-Jayne’s condition worsened, doctors determined that further intensive care would not be in her best interests, potentially only prolonging her suffering. Following a heartfelt discussion with the family, a decision was made to cease treatment, and Hallie-Jayne sadly passed away on the same day.
The family, devastated by the loss, reportedly agreed with the medical assessment, acknowledging the efforts made by the neonatal unit. The inquest is ongoing, with more information expected to emerge as proceedings continue.
