BBC doctor and 24 Hours in A&E star shares unusual 55p remedy to help cold and flu symptoms

BBC doctor and 24 Hours in A&E star, Dr. Oscar Duke, has shared an unusual 55p remedy to help alleviate cold and flu symptoms. In a recent appearance on BBC Morning Live, Dr. Duke, known for his work on the documentary series, discussed home remedy hacks to combat the common cold and flu.

As the colder weather sets in and children return to school, the risk of catching seasonal illnesses increases. Dr. Duke highlighted the role of environmental factors, such as close proximity in indoor spaces, in the spread of viruses that cause colds and flus. He emphasized the importance of understanding the distinction between a cold and the flu, noting that symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, and fever are common in both infections.

Regarding flu vaccinations, Dr. Duke outlined the eligibility criteria for receiving the jab, including children aged 2 or 3, pregnant women, individuals over 65, those in clinical risk groups, carers, long-stay care home residents, frontline health and social care workers, and certain school children. He explained the timing of flu vaccinations to ensure maximum effectiveness during the peak flu season in December and January.

Dr. Duke also recommended a simple salt water remedy to alleviate cold and flu symptoms. Citing a study in Edinburgh, Scotland, he mentioned that gargling salt water could help reduce symptom duration by approximately two days. The affordable remedy involves mixing salt and bicarbonate of soda in water and using the solution to alleviate congestion and discomfort associated with respiratory infections.

In addition to the salt water remedy, Dr. Duke suggested maintaining a healthy diet, including items like chicken soup and honey, to support the body’s recovery from flu and colds. Overall, these tips aim to provide relief and support immune health during the common cold and flu season.
