BBC Morning Live’s Dr Oscar Duke has shared a helpful tip for combating cold and flu symptoms using a 27p kitchen cupboard item. The resident doctor on the morning show suggested that a common ingredient found in most kitchens could provide relief without the need for over-the-counter medication. Dr Duke discussed with hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton how everyday items like table salt could be used to alleviate symptoms. He explained that mixing table salt with water could offer instant relief and that a bottle of table salt can be purchased for as little as 27p at supermarkets like Tesco. The doctor emphasised that while there is no cure for the common cold, managing symptoms can help ease discomfort.
According to Dr Duke, saltwater drops made by mixing salt and bicarbonate in boiled water can help reduce symptom duration by about two days. He recommended a mixture of three teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate in a bowl of water, to be diluted with 250ml of water for use. Dr Duke highlighted the effectiveness of saline solutions in managing cold symptoms and referred to a study in Edinburgh that supported the benefits of saltwater drops in reducing symptom duration. He also mentioned other remedies such as honey and chicken soup, which have been recognised for their potential benefits in alleviating cold symptoms.
The doctor stressed the importance of homemade remedies and mentioned that honey, particularly when taken at bedtime, could help alleviate symptoms. He also discussed the benefits of chicken soup in clearing mucus from the respiratory airways. Dr Duke further explained that using saline solutions in the form of sprays or droppers could help break down secretions and provide relief. While these remedies may help in managing symptoms, it’s important to note that they do not eliminate the virus itself. Dr Oscar Duke’s advice provides a cost-effective and accessible way for people to ease cold and flu symptoms from the comfort of their homes.
