Beauty expert shares ‘risky’ TikTok skin trend that can cause ‘long-term damage’

A warning has been issued by a beauty expert about a viral skincare trend on TikTok that could potentially cause “long-term damage”. The trend involves using garlic as a home remedy for acne, but if not applied correctly, it can lead to chemical burns on the skin. Despite claims by some that garlic can help treat acne due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, there are significant risks associated with its misuse.

Sarah Millecam, a beauty expert from Beautiful Brows and Lashes, emphasised the importance of using garlic properly. While allicin in garlic can combat acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation, Millecam suggested that consuming garlic is more beneficial for the skin than applying it directly. Antioxidants in garlic can protect the skin from environmental damage and premature aging.

However, caution is advised when using garlic in skincare routines, as direct and undiluted application can lead to skin irritation or burns. Millecam highlighted cases of second-degree burns from leaving garlic on the skin for too long. She recommended relying on scientifically-backed treatments like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, or gentler natural alternatives such as tea tree oil, aloe vera, and chamomile.

In a world where viral beauty hacks dominate social media, Millecam urged people to seek advice from skincare professionals and avoid potentially harmful DIY remedies. She stressed the importance of considering individual skin types and consulting experts before trying new skincare trends to prevent long-term damage.

As beauty enthusiasts explore various skincare treatments, it’s essential to prioritise safety and make informed decisions to avoid unintended consequences on the skin.
