Travellers heading to a popular destination have received a significant boost as the visa fee for UK tourists has been scrapped. Wales Online reported that the government’s decision to make visas free starting from October aims to enhance the tourism sector. Brits will have a limited time to take advantage of this offer, with the six-month pilot programme set to run from October 1 until April 1, 2025. During this period, tourists will receive free 30-day visas upon arrival in the country.
The move is part of Sri Lanka’s efforts to attract more tourists by simplifying the visa process and making it more affordable. The country, known for its natural beauty, cultural sites, and delightful cuisine, has seen a decline in tourism due to various challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and a financial crisis. However, with nearly two million arrivals by mid-August last year, there are signs of recovery. The UK ranks second as a key tourism market for Sri Lanka, following India.
Data shows a surge in interest in travel to Sri Lanka since the announcement of the new visa rules. The free visa programme, which also includes tourists from 34 other countries, is expected to make the country more accessible to UK travellers. Gemma Brown, Head of Product at Travel Republic, highlighted that the changes will make Sri Lanka a more appealing destination for British tourists, with a rise in Google searches reflecting the growing interest.
While the visa fee of $50 (£38) is set to be waived during the trial period, it is crucial for British travellers to take advantage of the free visa programme before it ends in April 2025. After this period, the scheme will be reassessed, and there is a possibility that it may be discontinued. This initiative aims to boost tourism in Sri Lanka and position the country as a competitive destination in the global tourism market.
