A 10-year-old boy tragically lost his life in a quadbike accident after taking the vehicle without his parents’ permission, an inquest revealed. Thomas Bull passed away in hospital after the quadbike he was riding tipped over, trapping him underneath it on his family’s farm. Despite being familiar with farm activities, Thomas knew he was not allowed to ride the quadbike alone. However, on June 7, he took the quadbike out without his parents, Jo and Chris, knowing. When Thomas did not return home, his parents became worried and found him trapped under the overturned quadbike in a field on their Lancashire farm.
Emergency services were called, and Thomas was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary. Doctors initially had hope for his recovery, but his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing on June 10 due to crush injuries. The Health and Safety Executive did not pursue further investigation after concluding their assessment at the farm. The inquest determined that Thomas, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to multiple-organ failure exacerbated by the crushing incident. The risk of the quadbike overturning was heightened by his age and weight.
Coroner Richard Taylor recorded the incident as an accidental death, stating that Thomas lost control of the quadbike, leading to the fatal accident. Family and friends paid tribute to Thomas at his funeral, remembering him as a passionate farmer’s son who adored tractors and engines. Over £36,000 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in his memory. At his funeral, a procession of tractors followed his coffin in a final tribute to the young boy who loved farm life.
