An 11-year-old boy from Caerphilly, Ioan Watts, faced a life-changing experience after an 8ft fall outside his home that left him with a traumatic brain injury. Following the fall in October 2022, Ioan required the assistance of the Wales Air Ambulance to be rushed to the University Hospital of Wales for emergency brain surgery. Ioan spent three weeks in a coma, and his recovery journey involved re-learning basic functions like walking and talking.
Two critical care teams from the Wales Air Ambulance sprung into action on the day of the accident to provide advanced critical care to Ioan. The dedication and expertise of the medical team helped save Ioan’s life, leading to a long period of recovery for the young boy. Despite the challenges he faced, Ioan decided to give back to the charities that aided him by setting a goal to climb Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, to raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance and Child Brain Injury Trust.
Accompanied by Jez James, one of the medics from the Wales Air Ambulance who assisted in Ioan’s rescue, the courageous boy completed the challenging hike and raised £539 for the charities. Jez James expressed his admiration for Ioan’s determination and remarkable recovery, emphasising the importance of patient outcomes in their line of work. Ioan’s mother, Lydia, shared her gratitude towards the air ambulance crew for their lifesaving efforts, highlighting the immense impact they had on Ioan’s journey to recovery.
The Wales Air Ambulance praised Ioan for his resilience and fundraising efforts, noting that his climb not only raised vital funds but also served as a symbol of hope and inspiration. Ioan’s commitment to giving back continued as he, along with his younger brother and friends, participated in a fundraising event in 2023, further demonstrating his determination to support the charities that supported him during his recovery.
As Ioan embarks on new beginnings, starting high school and embracing life’s milestones, his story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and community support in overcoming challenges.
