Cardiff Parkway Project Would Give a £5bn Boost to the Welsh Economy
The Welsh Government is still pending a planning decision on the new train station and integrated business park at St Mellons on the outskirts of Cardiff. The Cardiff Parkway project aims to provide a substantial boost to the Welsh economy, with independent research suggesting an annual uplift of up to £265m and a total economic impact of £5bn over 20 years.
The project involves the creation of a four-platform station on the South Wales Mainline, connected to a 900,000 sq ft business park. The development is expected to offer employment space for various sectors, including office, R&D, tech, and advanced manufacturing. The site has been endorsed by Rolls-Royce as a hub location, potentially creating thousands of jobs at Parkway.
A leaked Savills report commissioned by the Cardiff Capital Region highlights the project’s economic potential, estimating on-site employment for around 5,000 and a significant increase in net business rates revenue for the Cardiff Capital Region. The report emphasises the scheme’s ability to attract inward investment and enhance strategic sectors in Wales.
Despite cross-party support in the Senedd and Westminster, the project has experienced delays in the planning approval process by the Welsh Government. Cardiff Council’s leader, Huw Thomas, has expressed frustration over the prolonged decision-making period, urging swift action to support Cardiff’s development agenda.
If approved, Cardiff Parkway Developments would need to adjust financial plans due to planning delays. The project, initially projected to be privately funded and operated by Transport for Wales, aligns with public transport improvement efforts in the region. The scheme was identified as a significant development by both Welsh and UK governments, with potential benefits extending beyond economic factors.
With new leadership in the Welsh Government, there are expectations for a prioritised planning decision on the Cardiff Parkway project. The scheme’s approval could signal a significant milestone for infrastructure development in Wales, attracting investment and creating employment opportunities in key strategic sectors.
