A popular LGBTQ+ shop and café in Cardiff, The Queer Emporium, fell victim to a burglary in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The incident, currently under investigation by South Wales Police, involved smashing the shop’s window to gain entry and stealing cash and stock from the premises. Founder Yan White shared that upon arriving at work, they discovered the damage caused by the break-in, with items like spirits and two tablets used for the till system missing.
The financial impact of the burglary, including the cost of the window and stolen goods, is estimated to set the business back around £1,000. After police inquiries and necessary repairs, The Queer Emporium managed to reopen its doors on Wednesday, albeit with a delay in operations. This is not the shop’s first encounter with such incidents, as a similar break-in occurred last Christmas.
Yan White highlighted the supportive response from the community post-sharing the damage on social media. Expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support, Yan emphasised the importance of creating a safe and welcoming community space. Despite the setback, the team at The Queer Emporium remains resilient, with regular customers pledging their continued support.
South Wales Police issued a statement regarding the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward. They are continuing their investigations to apprehend the individual responsible for the burglary. The community’s solidarity has been a source of comfort for The Queer Emporium team, reinforcing their commitment to fostering a sense of togetherness and resilience in the face of adversity.
