Chilling CCTV footage captured the lucky escape of two binmen after an explosion occurred inside a refuse lorry in Barnet, North London. The incident, caught on camera, showed one of the workers moving away from the truck just moments before debris scattered across the street due to the blast set off by the vehicle’s compactor. Barnet Council officials have highlighted the dangers of improperly disposed of flammable objects, attributing the explosion to materials such as gas canisters, batteries, or aerosols not being recycled correctly.
The force of the explosion caused the wheelie bin and other items to be launched into the street. Cllr Alan Schneiderman, responsible for Environment and Climate Change at Barnet Council, expressed his relief that no injuries occurred to the crew. He emphasised the importance of properly recycling items to prevent such incidents, as the outcome could have been much worse.
This incident echoes a previous one in the same area where lithium batteries caused a fire in another refuse lorry. The council is urging the public to be mindful when disposing of potentially flammable materials, advising that such items should be taken to designated recycling points and not mixed with regular waste. Unwanted electrical items can be dropped off at WEEE Recycling points across the UK, while aerosol cans and gas canisters should be taken to local recycling centres.
