Climate campaigners have set up a camp at the site of a multi-million-pound gondola and zipline attraction in Swansea. The development, known as Skyline Enterprise, is planned to replace land at Kilvey Hill. The project includes a gondola ride, downhill karting, a zipline, a hilltop restaurant and bar, picnic areas, and upgraded mountain biking and walking trails, with a price tag of around £40 million.
Despite unanimous approval from senior councillors at Swansea council, the project faced 265 objections and only two expressions of support during the consultation period. The campaigners argue that the development will harm the local environment, particularly Kilvey woods, described as the “green lung of Swansea” and a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. They voiced concerns about the noise and light pollution impacting wildlife and disrupting the peaceful landscape.
Over the weekend, activists from Climate Camp Cymru established a camp at Kilvey Hill to protest the development. They criticized the council for allegedly disregarding their commitments to climate change and biodiversity conservation. The campaigners fear that the proposed construction, including buildings, cable cars, steel pylons, tracks, and restaurants, will irreversibly alter the tranquil natural setting of Kilvey Hill.
In solidarity with the protest, a “peaceful demonstration” for Palestinian solidarity took place at the council green. Both events aimed to urge Swansea council to reconsider the impact of the Skyline Enterprise development on the local environment and community. The activists stress the importance of preserving Kilvey Hill as a haven for residents to enjoy nature, unwind, and appreciate the panoramic views of Swansea bay and beyond.
The Save Kilvey Hill campaign spokesperson highlighted the significance of the area’s unspoiled beauty and the threat posed by the proposed attractions.
