A 20-year-old cocaine dealer has been sentenced to four years in a young offenders institution after being caught on CCTV topping up his drug phone in a convenience store. Solomon Rodrigues, who was just 16 when he first became involved in dealing heroin and crack cocaine, started his own drugs line shortly after leaving a young offenders institution for previous dealing.
Police identified Rodrigues after noticing a new drugs line operating in the Swansea area, with messages referencing cocaine and prices for deals. The phone associated with the drug line was traced to Rodrigues, leading to his arrest in September. At the sentencing hearing in Swansea Crown Court, the judge warned Rodrigues that if he continued dealing, his sentences would only get longer, cautioning him about his future choices.
Rodrigues’ defence lawyer mentioned that his client felt pressured to re-enter drug dealing due to debts and difficulties finding legitimate work with a drug conviction. Despite these challenges, the advocate believed Rodrigues still had the opportunity to turn his life around. Judge Paul Thomas KC, however, expressed concern that Rodrigues seemed to have chosen drug dealing as a career at a young age.
As Rodrigues was sentenced to four years’ detention with the possibility of release on licence after serving half the term, he was reminded by the judge of the consequences he might face if he chose to continue down the same path. Despite his age, Rodrigues was warned about the potential long-term impact on his life if he persisted in drug dealing. The case highlights the complexities surrounding youth involvement in drug-related crimes and the importance of intervention and rehabilitation strategies to prevent reoffending.
