An incredibly rare American coin from the year of the Declaration of Independence, found in a toffee tin, has sold for £25,000. Known as a Continental Dollar, the coin was minted in 1776, measuring 38mm across and made of pewter. With only around 6,000 believed to have been made and as few as 100 thought to remain, its rarity added to its value. The coin was recently sold at a sale by Wotton Auction Rooms in Wotton-under-Edge, Glos. Auctioneer Joseph Trinder described the discovery as a top find in his career, emphasizing the excitement around such a rare piece.
The valuable coin was stumbled upon in a large toffee tin brought by a private vendor. Trinder mentioned that the tin contained various items, including old coins, jewellery, carved stone, and fossils. In the midst of these treasures, the amazing Continental Dollar coin was found at the bottom. Due to its potential worth, the coin had to be authenticated in the United States by coin grading experts at the Numismatic Guaranty Company.
Out of the originally limited production, only 100 of these coins are believed to still exist, making this discovery even more significant.
