Council Removes Parking Sign on Major Cardiff Roundabout
Cardiff Council has recently taken down a road sign that falsely indicated motorists could park at restricted hours on one of the city’s busiest roundabouts, despite advising people to ignore it years ago. In a report by WalesOnline back in 2017, it was highlighted that there was a single yellow line around Gabalfa Interchange along with a sign indicating parking restrictions. Cardiff Council at the time stated that both should be disregarded, and double yellow lines would be implemented to clearly indicate no parking. Seven years later, the single yellow lines remain intact along with the parking sign, which was still present as of Monday, September 16.
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council explained that the Traffic Regulation Order on Gabalfa Interchange, which was sealed in 2018, prohibits parking and loading on the roundabout. The council emphasised that parking is not suitable due to the lack of pedestrian access, and any attempt to park in the area would obstruct traffic flow, posing a danger. The road sign specified parking restrictions between 8am and 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday, as well as loading restrictions from Monday to Friday during certain hours.
Gabalfa Interchange, one of Cardiff’s busiest junctions, saw approximately £70,000 spent on safety enhancements in 2013 following an increased number of recorded crashes. Despite these measures, Crash Map UK documented multiple incidents at the interchange between 2018 and 2019, including a crash in January 2024. The council’s belated action in removing the misleading parking sign serves to rectify the confused situation on the roundabout and prevent potential traffic hazards in the area.
Additionally, the presence of single yellow lines usually implies parking restrictions during certain times of the day, which may mislead motorists unfamiliar with the regulations. Moving forward, the council’s commitment to addressing such discrepancies promptly is crucial to ensuring road safety and promoting clear understanding of parking restrictions.
