Neath Port Talbot’s leisure services face an uncertain future as the council deliberates on the transfer of control from Celtic Leisure to the local authority. The original plan, due to be completed by April 2023, aimed to grant full control of leisure centres like Aberavon Leisure and Fitness Centre and Neath Sports Centre to the council. The move was intended to streamline services and operational hours.
However, financial constraints have led to a potential delay of up to five more years, pushing the transfer to 2025 at the earliest. At a recent scrutiny committee meeting, members discussed three options for the future of leisure services. One option involves bringing services back under council management by 2025, with a potential 2% council tax increase.
Alternatively, a five-year extension of the contract with Celtic Leisure could be agreed upon, maintaining existing terms, or revised terms could be negotiated with input from trade unions. The council spokesperson highlighted the recommendation for the second option, citing cost-effectiveness and job protection as key factors.
The proposals are set to be presented to the council’s cabinet for a final decision on October 2, 2024.
