A savvy dad has found a crafty way to win the sunbed wars at a hotel without even leaving his room. Darral Roblyn, from Rhondda Cynon Taff in Wales, shared his ingenious hack after returning to his hotel in Salou, Spain, at 6 am, too drunk to enjoy the pool the next day.
Roblyn avoided the morning rush for sunbeds by throwing his towel from his balcony onto the loungers below. He described using the ‘old golfer’s trick’ to check wind speed and direction before successfully landing his towel on the desired sunbeds. Despite his success, his hangover prevented him from taking advantage of his own ‘brainwave’.
The 46-year-old highlighted the issue of sunbed hogging, noting that some holidaymakers claim spots for hours without actually using them. Roblyn’s hack aimed to sidestep the morning rush for the best sunbathing spots and avoid selfish behaviour commonly seen at the hotel and on the beaches.
Reflecting on his inventive solution, Roblyn emphasised the importance of working smarter, not harder, when it comes to securing a sunbed. He suggested implementing time limits for leaving towels on beds to discourage long-term reservation tactics. Despite not using the sunbeds he reserved, Roblyn was pleased with his alternative approach to dealing with the sunbed scarcity.
Having previously lived and worked in Salou, Roblyn returns to the same hotel annually and noted that this year’s sunbed wars were particularly fierce. While his strategy may not have paid off due to his hangover, Roblyn’s tale serves as a reminder to holidaymakers to think outside the box when it comes to securing prime poolside real estate.
