The death toll in the incurable Marburg Virus outbreak has reached 11, as reported by Wales Online. The Marburg haemorrhagic fever has claimed the lives of 11 individuals in Rwanda, according to health authorities. The outbreak, resembling Ebola, has led to 36 confirmed cases, with 25 patients currently isolated in Rwanda. The country declared the outbreak on September 27, with the source traced back to patients in health facilities. Investigations are ongoing to determine the infection’s origin, which remains unclear, causing concerns about contagion in Rwanda.
Isolating infected patients and their contacts is crucial to halt the spread of Marburg and other viral haemorrhagic fevers. About 300 individuals who had contact with confirmed cases have been identified, with an undisclosed number now in isolation facilities, as per local health authorities. Rwandans have been advised to avoid physical contact to mitigate the disease’s spread. The majority of those affected are healthcare workers across six districts in Rwanda. The US embassy in Kigali has instructed its staff to work remotely and refrain from visiting offices to prevent exposure.
Like Ebola, Marburg is thought to originate from fruit bats and spreads through close contact with infected individuals’ bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. Without treatment, the Marburg virus can be fatal in up to 88% of cases. Symptoms include fever, muscle pains, diarrhoea, vomiting, and severe blood loss leading to death in some instances. Marburg outbreaks and cases have been documented in various African countries in the past, with the virus first identified in 1967 during outbreaks in Germany and Serbia.
