Delays are expected for new-build schools in Bridgend, as reported by Wales Online. The council has approved changes to the capital spending program, pushing back the start of several modernization projects until the 2025-26 financial year. This delay impacts the construction of five new schools in the area, including plans to relocate Heronsbridge School to a new site on Island Farm and the construction of a new school in Mynydd Cynffig.
The revised business case for the £22 million project at Island Farm needs approval from the Welsh Government before proceeding. Similarly, the proposed £9 million school in Mynydd Cynffig faces delays, which may involve the demolition of the existing school, air training corp facility, and allotment gardens in Kenfig Hill.
These setbacks also affect other projects, like a potential replacement school at Ysgol Bro Ogwr and new sites at Afon y Felin and Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr. Furthermore, over £3 million worth of highways works related to the school modernization program will also be postponed.
The decision to delay these works was made at a council meeting in July, where members also announced additional projects, such as funding for waste vehicles, coal tip safety, childcare facilities, services for children with additional learning needs, and refurbishment of sports courts. The council aims to improve various services while managing the delays in school construction projects.
