A recent study has highlighted the importance of managing high blood pressure to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Conducted by Australian researchers and involving over 30,000 individuals from 14 countries, the study identified a significant link between untreated hypertension and a higher likelihood of dementia in later life, particularly non-Alzheimer’s dementia. The research, published in Neurology, revealed that neglecting high blood pressure could increase the risk of non-Alzheimer’s dementia by 68% and Alzheimer’s by 36% among those over 60.
Lead author Dr. Matthew Lennon, from Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital, emphasised the potential role of blood pressure medication in preventing dementia in the future. He highlighted the importance of continued blood pressure management even in older age to support cognitive health and reduce dementia risk. The study’s findings add to existing knowledge on factors influencing dementia risk, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor sleep habits.
While dementia and Alzheimer’s are terms often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between them. Dementia encompasses various brain conditions, including Huntington’s, vascular, and Lewy body dementia, with Alzheimer’s representing the most common form characterised by progressive cognitive decline. Regular monitoring and management of high blood pressure are essential, considering its impact on overall brain health and dementia risk.
