Diabetes warning issued as experts say it’s linked to invisible cause

A recent study by Chinese researchers has uncovered a surprising link between type two diabetes and two common air pollutants. Typically, sugary snacks, processed meats, and a lack of physical activity are blamed for triggering type two diabetes. However, experts are now pointing to an unexpected risk factor – pollution. Specifically, ‘styrene’ and ‘ethylbenzene’, derived from petroleum and used in manufacturing synthetic rubber and resins, are the culprits. Ethylbenzene can be found not only in industrial uses but also in vehicle emissions, pesticides, and tobacco smoke, while styrene can be inhaled from indoor air contaminated by various sources including building materials, tobacco, vehicle exhausts, and photocopiers.

Dr Bin Wang, a key author of the study conducted at Huazhong University, stated, “Our research provides critical insights into how environmental pollutants like styrene and ethylbenzene exacerbate the genetic risk of type two diabetes.” The study involved examining 2,219 Chinese adults aged 18 to 80 over a six-year period. Through urinary data analysis and pollution-exposure tests, researchers established a link between exposure to these chemicals and an increased risk of type two diabetes. This risk was further amplified by genetic predisposition. The findings suggest the necessity of developing preventive strategies and regulations targeting environmental pollution by styrene and ethylbenzene to combat type two diabetes effectively.

Diabetes UK estimates that 4.4 million people in the UK have type two diabetes, with an additional 1.2 million potentially undiagnosed. Early detection and intervention are crucial for managing diabetes effectively. Common symptoms of diabetes include increased urination, dehydration, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, itching in the genital area, slow wound healing, and blurred vision.

It is imperative to raise awareness about the potential risks posed by environmental pollutants in the development of type two diabetes. By understanding and addressing these factors, public health strategies can be enhanced to protect individuals at high risk of developing this chronic condition.
