Doctor Warns Menopause Symptoms Often Misdiagnosed as Completely Separate Illness – Wales Online

One doctor is raising concerns that menopause symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as entirely different illnesses, potentially leading to women not receiving appropriate treatment or support. The expert underlined the complexity of menopause symptoms, noting that while the main signs are well-known, the individual experiences can vary significantly from person to person, causing confusion in medical evaluations.

Dr. Donald Grant, a GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, emphasised the challenges in diagnosing menopause accurately. He highlighted the risk of misdiagnosis causing symptoms to worsen and negatively impact women’s quality of life as support is delayed during this challenging period.

During World Menopause Month, Dr. Grant pointed out several conditions that women may be misdiagnosed with instead of menopause. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, for instance, shares symptoms like extreme tiredness, joint pain, brain fog, and difficulty sleeping with menopause. To differentiate between the two, doctors may need to conduct tests to assess hormone levels and menstrual history, especially for women in the typical age range for menopause.

Similarly, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and menopause share hormonal symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, and fluctuating hormone levels, but PCOS is characterised by ovarian cysts. Dr. Grant also noted the potential misdiagnosis of heart disease, as symptoms like hot flushes, fatigue, and shortness of breath can overlap with menopause, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis to provide appropriate care.

Thyroid disorders, including Hypothyroidism, may present symptoms similar to menopause, such as weight changes, mood swings, and irregular periods. Differentiating between the two conditions requires tests to identify specific hormonal changes, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment.

These warnings serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding menopause diagnosis and the need for thorough assessments to ensure women receive the right support and care during this phase of life.
