Doctor warns you’ve probably been using common medicine wrong

A medical expert has highlighted the importance of using nasal sprays correctly to alleviate nasal congestion effectively. Over-the-counter nasal sprays are a common solution for individuals dealing with blocked noses caused by colds and flu. Dr Suraj Kukadia, also known as Dr Sooj, took to TikTok to address common issues associated with nasal spray usage.

Nasal sprays work by reducing the swelling of blood vessels in the nose, allowing for better airflow. However, improper usage can lead to continued discomfort and ineffective relief. Dr Sooj pointed out common mistakes, such as not positioning the nozzle correctly in the nostril, which can result in fluid leakage. He recommended using nasal sprays with longer nozzles, like Pirinase, to target the right area in the nose and prevent wasteful leakage.

Additionally, Dr Sooj suggested switching to sprays that release less fluid if excessive dripping is a problem. He advised a technique for managing excess fluid by tilting the head forward and taking short, gentle sniffs. It’s crucial to use decongestant sprays for short-term relief only, as prolonged use can lead to worsened congestion.

The NHS website warns against using decongestant sprays for more than a week, reminding users to consult a GP if congestion persists. Addressing the root cause of nasal blockage, such as sinus infections or allergies, may require professional medical intervention beyond self-treatment for common cold symptoms. Always consult a pharmacist or GP before using decongestants if you are taking other medications to avoid potential interactions.

Proper usage of nasal sprays is essential for effective relief from nasal congestion. Understanding the correct technique and limitations of these medicines can lead to quicker recovery and better management of nasal issues.
