Dozens of cases of a new rapidly spreading Covid variant called XEC have been identified in the UK after it was first discovered in Germany. The XEC strain is a recombinant variant, originating from two previous strains that may have been concurrently contracted. Health officials are alarmed by this variant’s fast spread, with experts in the USA warning that it is still on the rise. Since its initial detection in Germany at the end of August, 82 cases have been confirmed in the UK. The XEC variant has now been reported in 27 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Despite only surfacing three weeks ago, the XEC variant has quickly accounted for 13% of Covid cases in Germany. Richard Orton, a Bioinformatics Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, stated that XEC is outpacing other circulating variants, indicating it could become the dominant strain globally in the coming months. Symptoms of the XEC variant are expected to be akin to other Covid strains, such as high temperature, sore throat, cough, headaches, body aches, and fatigue.
Additionally, another concerning strain to monitor is MV.1, which has emerged in India with a similar mutation to XEC, enabling rapid transmission. Hospitalisations due to Covid are anticipated to rise in the UK as colder weather approaches. A new vaccination initiative is set to commence next month to combat the virus spread effectively. As the world battles these evolving Covid variants, vigilance and strategic measures are crucial to safeguard public health.
