An inexperienced HGV driver has been sentenced to nine years in jail for causing the death of a motorcyclist in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The tragic incident occurred when the driver, Matthew Wright, failed to see motorcyclist Nigel Osler in his mirrors. Wright’s Amazon Prime lorry collided with Osler’s Yamaha bike, resulting in fatal injuries to the 61-year-old grandfather.
Following the collision, Osler was rushed to the hospital, where his family faced the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support. His organs were donated in accordance with his wishes. In a poignant victim impact statement, Osler’s wife described the agonising process of letting him go with dignity.
During the court proceedings, Judge Stuart Rafferty KC emphasised the irrevocable nature of the loss caused by Wright’s actions. Wright, who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was described as having made a last-minute decision to turn right across lanes instead of taking a safer route.
