A driver in Cardiff, Marshall Lewis, 25, was caught speeding by a police officer and went on to cause chaos during a high-speed chase on February 4. Lewis was driving a black Peugeot 108 on Heol Trelai in Ely when the pursuit began. The officer trailed Lewis as he reached speeds of up to 90mph and tried to dodge capture by driving recklessly through Penally Road and Bishopton Road, eventually careening into a central reservation.
Lewis’s dangerous manoeuvres continued as he entered Heol Ebwy, Church Road, and Tapley Close before coming to a stop. In a bid to escape, Lewis reversed at speed, ramming into the police car and injuring the officer driving it. He then crashed into several parked cars, writing off two vehicles, including a grey Mercedes and a Volkswagen Fox, and causing damage to a Toyota Yaris, as well as the police car amounting to £6,883.
During a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, Lewis admitted to charges of dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker, and four counts of criminal damage. The court learned that Lewis had a history of 18 previous convictions, including aggravated vehicle taking and harassment.
In mitigation, Lewis’s lawyer, Alice Sykes, stated that her client acknowledged his deplorable actions and expressed remorse. Judge David Wynn Morgan sentenced Lewis to 12 months in prison and banned him from driving for five years as a consequence of his actions.
