These advanced cameras have already demonstrated their effectiveness in catching offenders in areas such as Greater Manchester, Sussex, and Durham, leading to fines of up to £1,000 and six penalty points on driver’s licenses.
Experts from Swansway Motor Group have underscored the significance of these AI cameras in enhancing road safety. With the growing concern of 400,000 drivers annually using their phones while driving, these cameras serve as a direct response to mitigate such risky behaviours. The cameras can detect activities like texting or calling, even at high speeds of up to 186 miles per hour, thereby increasing the likelihood of offenders facing consequences.
Unlike traditional cameras, AI technology actively identifies and records violations. In locations like Devon, these cameras managed to detect over 240 offences within just 72 hours, demonstrating their efficiency in detecting and holding rule-breakers accountable. The implementation of these cameras signifies a strong stance by authorities to crack down on hazardous driving habits and ensure road safety.
The penalties for using a mobile phone while driving, even when stationary at traffic lights or in traffic queues, includes fines of up to £1,000 and six penalty points. Activities like taking photos, browsing the web, or holding a device in flight mode can also lead to severe penalties. New drivers, in particular, are reminded to exercise caution as getting caught using a hand-held phone within two years of obtaining a license results in an automatic licence suspension.
